by | Oct 21, 2022 | Divorce

Today, unlimited things in the world and day-to-day life put stress and strain on a marriage.

So many couples look outward to the world to blame their relationship problems when the underlying issue may actually be depression. Is depression a contributing factor to your divorce? Learn more about its impact on marriages here.

How depression can affect your marriage

Depression can cause one spouse to be withdrawn, irritable and uninterested in their home life. It may lead to infidelity or substance use and all these things – especially when they are combined – are the “perfect storm” for a divorce.

Depression impacts more than your mood

Depression is often viewed as a mood disorder, and while this is true, it doesn’t just cause someone to feel irritable and sad. It can impact their cognitive thinking, decision making and ability to see anything positive.

Many depressed people feel hopeless, and with feelings like this, it’s almost impossible to focus on something like saving a relationship that seems like it is doomed. For many people, depression becomes such a prominent problem in their life it results in the end of their marriage. Therapy and treatment are recommended to help those in these situations overcome this condition.

The impact of depression on divorce

If depression has led to the end of your marriage, it’s important to think about the future. Going through the divorce process, seeking treatment and healing is the best way to do this. You have legal rights during a divorce and protecting them is important. Working with professionals through the divorce process will help with this and ensure the divorce process is as hassle-free as possible.
